The “International Conference Belt and Road Initiative Lancang – Mekong Cooperation : New Era and New Start, September 19 – 20, 2018”, was held in collaboration with Chiang Mai University, Mae Fah Luang University and Consulate of People’s Republic of China in Chiang Mai. This conference, which had around 400 participants, was a regional academic stage that provided an opportunity for experts, scholars, officers to exchange their knowledge, opinion and experiences in order to promote collaboration in economics, social sciences and culture relations between China and countries in Greater Mekong Sub-region (GMS), in response to China’s “One Belt One Road.” strategy that plans to encourage economic expansion in the region.
At the opening ceremony of the conference, Professor Emeritus Kasem Wattanachai. M. D., Privy Councilor and Chairman of Chiang Mai University Council gave the opening remarks while H.E. Piriya Kempol, Thai Ambassador to China and H.E. Mr. Zhang Jiuhuan, Former Chinese Ambassador to Thailand and Consulting Committee of Foreign Policy, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, each presented a special lecture.
During the conference research results were presented together with the exchange of knowledge, experience, and opinions of scholars, researchers and interested parties from countries in ASEAN on various issues related to transportation, agriculture, tourism, industry and traditional Chinese Medicine. In particular the impact of cross border relations between China and the countries in Greater Mekong Sub-region was studied, as well as the study of expectations and outputs in regard to the implementation of China’s “Belt and Road Initiative”, which aims at creating a modern sea and silk road that improves Chinese trade links to international markets.
