Chiang Mai Journal of Science: Special Issue

Current Status and Future Perspectives in Mycology:
A Tribute to Emeritus Prof. Dr. Saisamorn Lumyong on Her 70th Birthday

Fungi represent one of the world’s eukaryotic kingdoms with about 2.2 to 3.8 million fungal species here on Earth. Although about 120,000 species have already been described, a number of recent studies have shown that the diversity of fungi may exceed previous estimates. Bearing in mind the essential roles that fungi play in the various ecosystems, it is important to investigate fungal diversity and to understand the roles that fungi play. This Special Issue aims to bring together a collection of papers focusing on fungal biodiversity and applications, covering areas including but not limited to fungal diversity assessments (traditional methods and metabarcoding), fungal systematics and evolution, fungal interactions with environments and other organisms, and areas of application (medical, biotechnological, pharmaceutical and agricultural).

This Special Issue is dedicated to Emeritus Professor Dr. Saisamorn Lumyong, Chiang Mai University, Thailand, in celebration of her 70th birthday in 2020. Apart from being Acting President of the Thai Mycological Association for 2019–2022, Professor Saisamorn is also the President of the Asian Mycological Association for 2019–2021. Her efforts to promote the study of mycology in Thailand are widely recognized and many new Thai fungi have been discovered during her long and distinguished career. Professor Saisamorn has always been willing to help colleagues wishing to study fungi in Thailand and elsewhere in the world. She has worked tirelessly to supervise and co-supervise research students, has trained many excellent young mycologists, and has always been a willing and scrupulously fair reviewer of manuscripts. Professor Saisamorn’s 356 publications and 6107 citations, resulting in an h-index of 39, reflects her current standing as an internationally-renowned mycologist.
