Representatives from Chiang Mai University under the INNO4Tourism project, joined a Training of Trainers (ToT) Programme on Curriculum Development on Sustainable Tourism at Università degli Studi di Palermo (UNIPA), Palermo, Italy.

Participants included Assistant Professor Dr. Orawit Thinnukool, Acting of the Dean to International Collaboration and Fundraising of the College of Arts, Media and Technology; Assistant Professor Dr. Yuthasak Chatkaewnapanon, Head of the Department of Tourism, Faculty of Humanities; Associate Professor Dr. Pradthana Jaipong, Director of the School of Lifelong Education, Chiang Mai University; and Assistant Professor Dr. Pattaraporn Khuwuthyakorn, as Project Manager.

The training, titled “Training of Trainers Programme (ToT) on Curriculum Development on Sustainable Tourism,” was held under the INNO4Tourism project, funded by the European Union’s Erasmus+ program within the Capacity Building in Higher Education (CBHE) Action framework. This INNO4Tourism Project aims to enhance and modernize the workforce in Thailand and Lao PDR’s tourism and hospitality sector by promoting collaborative mechanisms between the business sector and higher education institutions (HEIs) through teaching and learning activities. Chiang Mai University’s participation in the project includes contributions from its College of Arts, Media and Technology, Faculty of Humanities, School of Lifelong Education, and Faculty of Education.

The ToT Programme aims to build HEIs staff capacity in sustainable tourism curriculum development, enhancing essential skills for students and graduates entering the workforce, including IT skills, green skills, and entrepreneurial skills. This effort is part of Chiang Mai University's broader initiative to strengthen its “The Career Office,” aligning with Holistic Career Services approach and fostering a pilot University-Business Cooperation Mechanism (UBC Mechanism).

During the training, Chiang Mai University representatives presented the findings from a study on “Overview of the Skills Demands and Gaps in Current Hospitality and Tourism Workforce in Thailand,” allowing participants to engage in in-depth discussions and knowledge exchange among HEIs staff from both Southeast Asia and European Union universities. The programme also featured lectures on topics such as The role and academic offer in tourism sector in the country; The sustainable tourism practices; AI’s potential in Higher Education Teaching; Foundations and pathways to a Post-Secondary Curriculum in global sustainable tourism.

Additionally, the academic staff from Chiang Mai University participated in workshops aimed at developing a sustainable tourism curriculum. This curriculum will be according with findings from research conducted under the INNO4Tourism Project and has been adapted to international standards to meet the needs of business sector, stakeholders, and align with the educational, business, and tourism labor market contexts in Thailand. The workshop also included activities for knowledge exchange, seeking future project collaborations, focusing on European Commission funding opportunities and establishing student and staff exchange programs.
