UniBOX: CMU's 100% Biodegradable Food Container with Built-in Spoon Makes Its Debut in Switzerland
6 August 2025
Corporate Communication and Alumni Relations Center (CCARC)
The Faculty of Engineering at Chiang Mai University has created "UniBOX," a food container with a built-in spoon that is 100% biodegradable. This innovation not only meets the demand for a convenient and sustainable food container but also highlights the potential of Thai research for commercial applications. To promote Thailand’s soft power and expand the market for Thai products and services, 4,800 UniBOXes were distributed for testing at the 26th Thai Festival
in Bern, Switzerland.
Made from biodegradable paperboard, this eco-friendly food container comes with a spoon built into the lid, offering both convenience and a reduction in plastic waste. The innovation showcases the strength of Thai research and its potential for commercialization, marking an important step toward entering the global market. Looking ahead, there are long-term plans for international collaboration to formally introduce this Thai technology to a worldwide market.
Professor Dr. Nakorn Tippayawong and Assistant Professor Dr. Korrakot Yaibuathet Tippayawong from the Faculty of Engineering, together with a team of students and CMU’s Northern Science and Technology Park, collaborated with the Royal Thai Embassy in Bern to test the market abroad during the 26th Thai Festival in Bern. A total of 4,800 UniBOX containers were distributed to evaluate their usability, gather consumer feedback, and assess their potential for integration into the global supply chain, while also promoting Thai products, services, and soft power in Switzerland. The UniBOX received positive responses from both Swiss and international participants.
