The Joint ARCH CMU – KU Leuven International Summer School 2024 “Systemic Design for Health”

Between August 10 and September 2, 2024, the Faculty of Architecture at Chiang Mai University hosted the international workshop project "The Joint ARCH CMU – KU Leuven — WHO-T?chne International Summer School 2024: Systemic Design for Health."

This initiative was a collaboration between Chiang Mai University and KU Leuven
in Belgium, supported by the World Health Organization (WHO) – Techne on the topic of "Environmentally Sustainable Healthcare Facilities Resilient to Infectious Disease Outbreaks and Natural Hazards." The project involved students and faculty from various universities, along with experts from national and international public health organizations from five countries, totaling 42 participants.

The institutions represented included:

3. KU Leuven Faculty of Architecture
4. Department of Architectural Engineering, Institute of Technology of Cambodia
5. Faculty of Architecture, Pannasastra University of Cambodia
6. Faculty of Civil Engineering and Planning, Universitas Trisakti
7. World Health Organization Country Office Thailand
8. Department of Health Service Support, Ministry of Public Health
9. Chiang Mai Provincial Public Health Office.

The training consisted of online lectures from August 10 to 24, 2024, and a hands-on workshop at the Faculty of Architecture, Chiang Mai University, from August 25 to September 2, 2024.

The opening ceremony took place on August 26, 2024, with Assoc. Prof. Dr. Paendin Uncha, Dean of the Faculty of Architecture, welcoming participants, and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Worakan Buuranapathana, Assistant to the President for International Affairs and Global Missions, serving as the chairperson. Dr. Narong Tonanuwat, Honorary Consul of the Kingdom of Belgium in Chiang Mai, also offered remarks. Additionally, Dr. Alisa Yanasa, WHO Representative in Thailand, introduced the WHO Thailand office, followed by Mr. Michele Di Marco, Coordinator of WHO – T?chne, presenting the T?chne network. Assoc. Prof. Koen De Wandeler from KU Leuven summarized the 2023 "Systemic Design for Health" summer school, hosted by Thammasat University, during which the participant a draft Comprehensive Resilience Assessment System (CRAS) for primary health care centers in suburban and rural area sin Southeast Asia.

The 2024 workshop built on the output of the previous year: participants tested the CRAS in their hope countries, evaluated and fine-tuned it, and based on their findings, developed a prieliminary design brief for sustainable primary healthcare facilities capable of handling infectious disease outbreaks and natural disasters. The program also included visits to case study sites, including a health promotion hospital in Ban Srikamchompoo, Chiang Mai, on August 26, 2024, and a field trip to the "Lamphun Healing Town" project in Lamphun on August 28, 2024. The closing ceremony took place on September 2, 2024, featuring presentations of the study results from the workshop, conducted in a hybrid format (online and offline), to all participants.
