International Week of Welcome 2024: A Celebration of Global Cultures at Chiang Mai University

On Monday, July 22, 2024, the International College of Digital Innovation at Chiang Mai University hosted the much-anticipated International Week of Welcome 2024 (I-WOW) at the scenic Lan Sang Keet, Ang Kaew Reservoir. The event ran from 5:00 PM to 10:00 PM and showcased the university’s commitment to fostering a diverse and inclusive academic environment, bringing together over 500 participants from various faculties and institutions.
The evening commenced with an opening speech by Assistant Professor Dr. Worakanya Buranaphatthana, Assistant to the President for International Relations. Dr. Buranaphatthana emphasized the importance of global collaboration and understanding within the academic community as a means of enriching the educational experience for all. Assistant Professor Dr. Benjamas Suksatit, Vice Dean of the International College of Digital Innovation, highlighted the significance of culture and diversity during her reporting speech. “This event is a special occasion for us to come together and celebrate the rich tapestry of cultures that make up our vibrant academic community,” she noted.
The event further featured welcoming speeches from esteemed diplomats, including Consul General Chen Haiping of the People’s Republic of China, Consul General Horikoshi Hisao of Japan, and Vice Consul Ramji Ramaswamy of India. Their presence symbolized the collaborative spirit of international relations and the deep connections shared between the countries represented. Participants from multiple faculties, including the Faculty of Agro-Industry, Faculty of Social Sciences, Chiang Mai University Business School, Faculty of Economics, Faculty of Nursing, Faculty of Science, and Faculty of Humanities, united for this splendid occasion. Additionally, Wenzhou Medical University from China joined the festivities, enhancing the event's global perspective. Attendees had the opportunity to engage in a variety of cultural performances and activities that celebrated the unique traditions of different nations. Numerous booths representing countries such as China, Myanmar, Japan, and Pakistan offered attendees a chance to explore and experience diverse customs, foods, and crafts.
The event also showcased the vibrant spirit of student engagement, with participation from several student clubs, including ISSI CMU, SEED CMU, CMU Blockchain Association Club, ICDI Student Union, and the DiNovate Club from ICDI. These groups contributed to the dynamic atmosphere, hosting interactive activities and performances. I-WOW 2024 served as a remarkable platform for fostering cultural exchange and community building, marking a successful start to the academic year for all students and faculty members. As the sun set over the Ang Kaew Reservoir, the celebration of unity in diversity left a lasting impression on everyone in attendance, highlighting Chiang Mai University's dedication to nurturing an inclusive and globally minded academic environment.
