Energy Research and Development Institute, Chiang Mai University was established on the 6th of March 2007 by merging two efficient institutes, the Energy Management and Conservation Office and the Biogas Technology Center. The emerging institute was entitled “Energy Research and Development Institute, Chiang Mai University (ERDI-CMU). The institute is aimed to be a center of excellence in terms of research and development of biogas and all types of energy. Later, H.R.H. Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn bestowed the name “Energy Research and Development Institute-Nakornping, Chiang Mai University” on the institute. The main objectives of the institute include energy research, knowledge development, application of knowledge with energy and environmental crises, and biogas development and usage to attain the highest advantages. It is anticipated that the institute will successfully become the center of professionalism and knowledge in terms of energy of the country and the ASEAN region.

Operations
The operations of Energy Research and Development Institute-Nakornping, Chiang Mai University mainly focused on renewable energy, energy conservation, energy research and development as well as academic services.

1. Renewable Energy
ERDI offers research and development services on renewable energy especially on biogas, biomass and biodiesel. Such services provided to both Government and Private sectors.

2. Energy Conservation
ERDI promotes energy conservation in buildings and industries such as energy conservation consultation, energy auditing, and effects from energy consumption.

3. Research and Development Projects
ERDI linked its research projects to serve all level of educational institute. The qualified and useful academic researches have been distributed to external communities. As well, ERDI attempts to expand its research network in national and international levels.

4. Academic Services
ERDI provided academic services on energy conservation, renewable energy and Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) by linking up its research projects to the academic services in industrial and economical sections both in local and international levels. Such services include:
