CMU Wins Climate Action Excellence Award, Demonstrating Outstanding Capacity in Energy and Environment

On September 15, 2025, Chiang Mai University’s Centre for Environmental and Energy Research and Innovation was awarded the Climate Action Excellence award from the Climate Change Institute (CCI), Federation of Thai Industries (FTI) during the CCI Climate Change Forum 2025 at the M Tower in Bangkok.
The Centre for Environmental and Energy Research and Innovation serves as one of CMU’s main driving mechanisms on sustainability and systemic solutions to climate change. The Climate Action Excellence award, accepted by Vice President Associate Professor Prasert Rerkkriangkrai, is a testament to the university’s leading role in advancing these causes. This award honors organizations with exemplary excellence in greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction, renewable energy transition and sustainable resource management.
CMU is the only educational institution to receive this honor, sharing the recognition with leading organizations and corporations in the energy sector and other major industries. This achievement highlights the university's commitment to the comprehensive development and implementation of its carbon neutrality roadmap, which focuses on five key areas:
1. Carbon footprint monitoring: This involves developing a platform for efficient and transparent data management to track the university’s carbon emissions.
2. GHG mitigation: CMU is working to reduce greenhouse gas emissions through energy-saving measures in addition to promoting renewable energy and sustainable waste management.
3. GHG removal, capture, and storage: The university is implementing CCUS technology, building carbon sinks, and developing carbon credit and offset systems.
4. Climate adaptation and resilience: Efforts are focused on enhancing resilience to and preparing for the effects of climate change, as well as building collaborations with other organizations.
5. Education, research, and community outreach: CMU aims to enrich knowledge on energy and the environment, integrate this knowledge into teaching, create training centers, and collaborate with other sectors.
Additionally, at the same event, UNISERV was recognized with the Climate Action Initiating award. This award is designed to acknowledge an organizations’ commitment to climate issues, increase motivation, and provide a platform for exchanging ideas.
These prestigious awards are a testament to the university's position at the forefront of carbon neutrality and net zero emissions advancement, placing it alongside the nation's leading business organizations. As an aspiring 'carbon neutral university' and a leading agent of change on both a regional and global scale, CMU is dedicated to producing research, innovation, and management practices on energy and environmental issues in pursuit of a sustainable future.
