CMU Library signs a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with FamilySearch International, USA

        Mr. Pratch Sanguansak, Director of the Library, along with the management team and staff, participated in the signing ceremony of the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between Chiang Mai University Library and FamilySearch International, USA. The event was led by Mr. Steve G. Stevens and his team, aiming to preserve and digitize rare materials. The ceremony took place in the Living Space Room, 3rd floor of the Library, on Tuesday, January 16, 2024.

        The signing of the MOU between Chiang Mai University Library and FamilySearch International occurred because the Chiang Mai University Library possesses valuable and rare informational resources that require urgent conservation and preservation, such as rare books, heritage documents, audiovisual materials, Lanna and Northern Thai publications. FamilySearch International recognized the value of these rare resources and expressed their intention to support the preservation of these resources in digital format. This initiative aims to conserve, preserve, and disseminate informational resources for education, research, and study purposes.

FamilySearch International is an international organization with expertise in digitizing resources and operates on a non-profit basis. Both parties share common goals and objectives to digitize rare informational resources to preserve, conserve, and disseminate them for educational, research, and study purposes. The resources involved in this cooperation include rare funeral memorial books, books distributed at funerals, microfilm of newspapers, and possibly other resources in the future.

The benefits of this cooperation include:

  1. The Library establishes international collaboration between organizations.

  2. Rare informational resources are digitized with the cooperation of FamilySearch at no cost.

  3. The Library receives digital data according to modern standards.

  4. Rare informational resources are preserved and made accessible to support education, research, and study.
