Amidst swift changes happening in the world (social, economic, educational, etc.), Chiang Mai University has set a goal to equip its graduates with 21st century skills through up-to-date learning in order to create ‘global citizens’. Through the CMU Smart Students development scheme and the incorporation of technology into teaching, research, and management under the concept of Digital University, these new graduates will set out to do great things in their respective fields and will be able to work anywhere in the world.

Becoming ‘CMU Smart Students’ has been divided into six main attributes that will equip graduates well for future success.
1. Smart IT – CMU students will receive training on digital literacy skills. These skills will allow students to use technological equipment for the fullest benefit to ensure learning, communication, task execution, and collaboration are up-to-date and efficient. With a CMU account, students can access e-learning and online courses offered on the CMU Life Long Education platform with ease through a wireless network throughout the campus.

2. Smart English – Students will receive training in foreign language skills, particularly English, that will allow them to speak, read, and write with accuracy and confidence. Teaching and language activities are provided along with opportunities to interact with international students to foster learning, fluency and confidence. Moreover, students will have the chance to participate in an overseas exchange programme. Such an international atmosphere helps promote an international mindset, encouraging students to adapt to be able to work in a variety of contexts.

3. Smart Character – CMU graduates will be equipped with humility, gratitude, respect for the rights of self and others, respect for the law, and confidence in proper public expression.

4. Smart Health – The University encourages students to pursue involvement in sports at a variety of provided facilities such as the Main Stadium, the gymnasium, or numerous outdoor exercise spots all over campus. Plans are also well underway for the addition of a new sports facility, which will soon be ready for service. In terms of food hygiene, the new food centre offers quality, affordable, and healthy menu items, and all vendors pass a food safety inspection required by the public health authority.

5. Smart Brain - Students will be trained to have the initiative to develop and employ their knowledge in innovative ways. They will also have the opportunity to become start-up entrepreneurs with consultation and guidance from the Science and Technology Park (STeP). Many young CEOs start their ventures during their university years with inspiration from their courses. These start-ups then generate income and bring great reputation to the country.

6. Smart Heart – From their first days at CMU, students learn about public consciousness through first year activities. Through these, students engage in public service activities within and outside the University. These, along with other supplementary activities, help give back to the community in different spaces. The goal is to produce honest and responsible students with a good nature and a heart for volunteering, who strive to make contributions to society.

CMU is committed to the development of CMU Smart Students with all six core attributes. Lecturers, staff, and student leaders of all levels organise academic activities that produce graduates with these qualities as stated in the University’s Resolution.
