From Tradition to Sustainability: CMU Trekking 2024 Certified as a ‘Carbon Neutral’ Event
13 March 2025
Corporate Communication and Alumni Relations Center (CCARC)
Chiang Mai University (CMU) has reached a remarkable milestone in its journey toward environmental sustainability, as the CMU Trekking 2024 event has officially been certified as carbon neutral by the Thailand Greenhouse Gas Management Organization (TGO). This achievement reflects CMU’s steadfast commitment to environmental responsibility and its aspiration to become a leading green university.
Held annually, CMU Trekking is a cherished tradition where first-year students ascend Doi Suthep to pay homage to Phra That Doi Suthep, one of Chiang Mai’s most revered landmarks. The event fosters unity among students across all faculties and years. In 2024, the tradition took a greener turn as CMU incorporated environmental considerations into its planning, calculating and offsetting the event’s total emissions—amounting to 107 tCO?e (tonnes of CO? equivalent [gases])—through a certified carbon credit scheme.
This recognition from TGO, with the certificate signed by Mrs. Natarika Wayuparb Nitiphon, Deputy Executive Director of TGO, highlights the university’s success in harmonizing cultural preservation with environmental stewardship. It also reinforces CMU’s role as a trailblazer in sustainable event management within the higher education sector.
Looking ahead, CMU remains committed to further reducing its carbon footprint and expanding eco-friendly initiatives. Through ongoing efforts to cut greenhouse gas emissions and champion sustainable practices, the university aims to inspire other organizations to follow suit on the path to environmental sustainability.
